As for the IFE 747 discussion, honestly this remains a disgrace. We have heard for 3+ years that AF was going to retire these planes. They haven't and the IFE remains rotten for all but one or two of the fleet of 747. So at this stage, I am not buying the excuse that they are phasing them out too soon in time to fix the IFE. To many years have passed for that excuse to be taken as genuine.
I am not going to defend the very poor IFE on AF 747s (and it's 3 747s with PTV at the seat in Y).

I believe the excuse to be genuine, though. AF was planning to retire its 747s, mostly due to their fuel consumption. The global crisis, with the subsequent emphasis on cash (remember AF dropped its bid on Czech Airlines), combined with the sharp decrease in oil prices made the replacement of the 747s one of the first capital expenditures to be scrapped.
