I was curious what Qantas stands for? How did they come up with that name?

I have found it very funny that many people here in NZ call them the Red Rat. Today at the hotel pool, an Australian, told me that Qantas stands for: Quick And Nasty Try Another Service.

What do others call it? in America, we call Ford, Found on Road Dead or Fix and Repair Daily.
