I'd suggest searching for some good deal far off fares in these classes that are fully refundable. Then lay-low for a while and see what pops up with sales, etc. Sounds like this offer is ripe for a well executed mistake fare
I didn't put a lot of detail about this offer in my OP since it was moved from the UA board where there was a fair amount of discussion on some targeted UA offers to folks that didn't re-qualify for various elite levels in 2010. In my case, I'm crashing from 1K down to 2P. Or at least I was...with this offer they gave me 1P status for 2010 and the ability to move back up to 1K if I travel the 5K in a high fre class.
To take advantage of the offer, I have to register by Feb 28 and then have 90 days to fly the 5K. The status is good until Jan 2011, so the earlier I do this, the more time I'll have as a 1K. At the same time, I'm clearly not traveling nearly as much as I used to, so I guess I'm not really in all that much of a hurry...
