Diesel pumps that are near the regular gasoline pumps generally have the same nozzle size as the gasoline pumps. So it's quite possible to make the mistake there.
DO NO TRUST THE COLOR of the handle. It means nothing. I've seen handles that were red, white, green, orange... you name it. All were diesels.
If they charged you 358$ for the repair, I think it's fair. The fuel will need to be drained from tank, and the tank flushed. Then the fuel lines (coming and going) will need to be drained and flushed, the fuel filter will need to be changed, and the fuel injectors will need to be flushed too, if not replaced.
Just chalk it up to experience. And be happy that you didn't put gasoline in a diesel vehicle. That's a 5000$+ experience.
As for who pays it... If it's not covered by an insurance or a policy, then I'd say you're out of luck there.
