I've liked AMS ever since I was able to make a 30 minute connection (going to the US, no less) with just a bit of running.

I wouldn't dream of making it at CDG or even FRA. AMS is quite compact. As far as a point for a relatively pleasant wait for a long transfer period? i vote Zurich hands down in terms of shops, bars, general asthetic appeal, etc.
FWIW, The US customs and immigration lines aren't very fun for Americans either. I have also been 'barked' at, peppered with questions, as well as waited through the tight security lines. That said, other than being able to keep my shoes on, I have never noticed a warm welcome in any european hub either. My computer has been re-checked at random several times at FRA, i've been pat down there as well, but I just reckon it's par for the course these days.
