I always take my shoes off for a flight more than 90 minutes. My feet swell, and shoes can be quite painful, no matter what type I wear. However, my nice, clean cotton socks are no one's business but my own, as they, and my feet, remain on the floor in front on my seat. For any trip out of my row, the shoes go back on - the lav floor is too gross for me!
