Had a similar experience in London - we filled our Skoda with petrol while the car was a diesel. The petrol nozzle will fit in diesel and the car simply stopped. No damage to the motor and we paid about £150 to have the tank drained then refilled with the correct diesel.
However, diesel nozzles will NOT fit in regular because diesel can cause plenty of damage to petrol motors.
Are you really sure you used a green nozzle for the car?
