I did the exact same thing on a LH award ticket purchased with CO miles last week. Once I selected seats on LH's website, the seats even showed in my account on CO's website (just the seat numbers, the seat map is still unavailable).
Awesome, was able to do that (after 25 minutes on hold... for a 2 minute conversation). He told me I was supposed to get an e-mail with the United confirmation number (which I didn't). Would be nice if they just said that in the first place...
