In November I was able to book an award flight SYD-LAX (QF), LAX-ORD (AA) and ORD-DUB (AA) as a 64000 point award i.e. one award not separate segments. I wonder if it's possible to combine your trip to LAX and onward as one segment (depending on total miles). If you join AAAdvantage (free of charge) then you can do your own seat allocation online.
