Some observations
1) My experience over the years is that small stations are generally better than large.
2) Airports serving large cities and particularly New York are abysmal performers. I avoid them whenever I possibly can do so.
3) I can accept less but the standard of excellence in my experience is Changi airport in Singapore combined with flying Singapore Airlines.
I lived in Singapore for a couple of years and flew SQ 10 or so times per year. I flew either first or business class on all flights. On arrival I would be one of the first passengers off of the plane. I would quickly walk with my long legs to immigration (FYI, all flights into SIN are international).
Very often I would be the first to arrive at one of the immigration booths for residents and have no one in line in front of me. Clearing immigration normally took less than 30 seconds.
I would then quickly take the short walk to the SQ baggage claim area. Very often my bag(s) would be there ahead of me. I never, ever waited longer than 5 minutes during my 2+ years living there providing I flew in on SQ.
My normal total elapsed time from out of the aircraft door to picking my bag off of the carousel was less than 10 minutes.
Any airline and / or airport that wants to have a superior baggage handling operation should study Changi and SQ. And "No" I do not own any SQ stock. Sadly I haven't flown them in several years.
