Is the new fixed-back shell Y seat really that bad? I heard a lot of my friends complaining about it and wanting to switch to other airlines programs just because of the new Y seat.

Not really, I think that it's an upgrade from previous seats, the only problem is the thin cushion padding

Couple more questions:
Since the new Y seat doesn't recline, do you still need to adjust your seat to upright position during take off and landing?

Yes

If the reclining is done by sliding the seat cushion forward, does it decrease the leg room?
Quote:
It does decrease the leg room but it is worth having; due to the person not reclining into your space

Do you sleep better or worst with the new Y seat?
Quote:
My flight from HKG-LHR was a midnight flight so it was easier to sleep but what surprised me was that I slept for 9 hours straight and only 2 hours till landing

Do you think the new Y seat is the worst design ever in airlines industries?

It isn't the best or worst but it is a new design idea, the J class was a let down but it's still an upgrade. I think the worst is the current BA and Air China Y seat
