Hilton GI claims not checked out

I am on a business trip with 3 other people. 1 of them, a HHonors Diamond stayed for close to 2 months at a HGI. His scheduled checkout date was Dec. 18th. He got his bill under the door. He doesn't remember if he actually went to the desk or not - shouldn't matter. He goes to check in today, Jan. 4 for another 2 months and they said he was never checked out.

Apparently there were a couple of shirts hanging in the closet, 2 soda bottles half empty sitting next to the door, and a tube of toothpaste left in the bathroom. The management claims that they thought he was still occupying that room and for his convenience, never checked it out of the system. He said that was ridiculous as the bed was untouched, no towels used and the key was even deactivated after the 18th. When he asked why they just didn't store the items in the lost and found, they claim that they are not allowed to remove anything from the room.

Then they say he could just pay for half instead. Balking at this they finally said in a non-committal, verbal way they would credit it back. I am skeptical though. This is all on top of having his car broken into there while parked in a spot close to the door. They said there was no security video on that particular spot due to privacy issues with the pool. Also a nearly new, large bottle of Armani cologne was also missing from his room.
