On the other hand, if I understand the rules correctly, you should always be permitted to reclaim your items and be escorted out of the security checkpoint --- as if you were going back to the ticket counter to check your bag. At that point, you could put the items into your mail envelopes, find a mailbox (or find a friendly counter agent who might do it for you), and then head back into the security checkpoint line.
