That's another of my pet hates.

These damn companies that "fine" you if you haven't bought a ticket at a self service machine.
I might be wrong but I'm thinking of the ARN shuttle into the city which IIRC says if you board the train without a ticket you get charged extra.......or maybe it was AMS.
