Aircraft cabins don't really pressurize until a couple of thousand feet in the air anyways. By not having the A/C running they can get a little more power out of the engines as well. I'm guessing your flight was pretty full and and had heavy cargo.

Not sure why they would announce this though, as I understand it's fairly common. I can't think of a better explanation.
