I think another thing to remember is the recognition that oneworld Emerald gives over Sapphire. Perhaps not so much on BA, but I noted the benefits of Silver/Sapphire on Qantas - served first, individual CSM greeting etc. It does make one feel a bit more special.
Same on JAL too. The steward made a point of coming to my wife and I to take our dinner order first as we are both emeralds. BA have better beds though in business, and a wider choice of wine...so it all balances out, although the beef stew JAL serve as a snack is very good
