I think another thing to remember is the recognition that oneworld Emerald gives over Sapphire. Perhaps not so much on BA, but I noted the benefits of Silver/Sapphire on Qantas - served first, individual CSM greeting etc. It does make one feel a bit more special.
I agree. Never been "BA Emerald" but even as a lowly AY Plat/Emerald I have had the pleasure to enjoy upgrades from WT+ to CW on BA so I cannot even imagine how often they give those to their own Emeralds/BA Golds.
OT: I must admit that AY is quite picky when it comes to upgrades and they look the fare class paid more than AY/OW status. But then again it's been years since I last checked in for AY long haul w/o a confirmed J seat which has ruled me out for any possible upgrades anyway.
