DL's problem is that they don't really have a Western hub. SLC is too small, LAX is not a hub and SEA is a not so much a hub as a codeshare partner's hub. While DTW is an excellent hub to Asia, it's still not a Western hub.
Thus, NRT is effectively DL's Western hub. It'll be important with or without JAL.
Uh, there is no way NRT is Delta's Western hub. SLC has hundreds of flights a day. NRT has a few dozen. It's Delta's Asian hub, but certainly not it's western hub.
