AC started it to make money, certainly not for the benefit of its customers.
Once one understands that basic fact, all the apparent contradictions disappear.
Ultimately, business are in business for one, and one important reason: To attract AND retain a customer. To do so requires benefits to the customer
Those who cannot or will not do that, often find themselves out of business.
Simple as that.
