If maintenance is an issue, eliminate two TSOs doing gate screening or other pointless activities and hire one technician to maintain the machines. Work on improving the environment around the machines at the airport. I can't believe a decent HVAC technician could not design a system to put positive pressure, filtered air around the checkpoint to keep out much of the outside world dirt that is causing problems.
