It was correct since the first flight was UA metal.

If second bag was carry on size (for a main liner plane), then it could have been gate checked ("green tagged" in UA parlance) for free at LAX, picked up at the gate in YVR, and then checked with AC at YVR.

This is yet another reminder that not all air fares are equal.
