You left out an important word - AMERICAN TV. That, in my opinion is one of the root causes of this massive outcry. As a general population, Americans are significantly more up-tight about anything to do with nakedness than the majority of the western world.

Wrong!! I am South American - from the land of itty bitty bikinis. I can tell you Brazilian women, who are comfortable going to the beach wearing very little, are not comfortable being virtually strip searched and having their choice of undergarments viewed by a hidden away guy.
The difference is, first, when you go to the beach, you chose to show your body, and how much to show. Second, you get to see the people seeing you. That is actually the aspect that most bothers me - the fact that the person analyzing the images is not visible to me, and that I can't see the images generated by these machines.
