If you want to go into a locker room to change your clothes and/or take a shower (as I'm sure most of you have), strangers will see you naked. And not all of the people in that locker room will be naked, either -- so there is no "symmetry". The attendants at gyms do not walk around naked in the locker rooms.
And to those of you who don't trust that the government will not save the images of your scanned body, can't the same can be said about the owners and employees of gyms with locker rooms? But what would you think of someone who will not change his clothes in a locker room because he fears that a hidden camera could be recording him?
I think you're comparing apples and oranges.
If I want to go to the gym, I don't have to use the locker room. I can change at home, show up and work out, then go home again. I can shower at home if I want to. Now if I'm comfortable with the locker room situation, I can go in. Using the locker room isn't requisite for using the gym. If Gold's required that that I used the locker room and I didn't want to, I'm free to go to another gym that doesn't want to.
Now if I want to go on a flight, short of flying GA which is prohibitively expensive for most people (and even then TSA's trying to get its paws into that), I HAVE to deal with TSA. Buying a ticket on a different airline doesn't get me out of that. Going to a different airport doesn't get out of it either. Why should I HAVE to be seen naked in order to board a flight when other, less intrusive means are available and TSA just has chosen not to deploy them?
I think you're focusing on just one of the reasons of people not wanting to be seen naked. You're focusing on the body image issue. But so what if people have a body image issue? Why should they be FORCED into this when there really isn't a security gain?
For me people like me, being naked isn't an issue. I don't have a problem being naked when I want to be. In all those cases, it's voluntary. My issue is that it's none of their damn business. There's no reason to see me naked when other alternatives are available. I don't even like the patdown without an alarm.
The other issue is that TSA's being less than truthful about what it does and doesn't really make people aware of what it does and what it shows. If people are fully aware and can make an informed decision and THEN decide to go in, that's all well and good. The problem is that a lot of people don't realize what they're getting into. Like TSA always says, if you have nothing to hide, there's nothing to worry about. Get it all out in the open and let people decide. However, forcing the issue on people isn't the right way to go.
