So Air France Pilot seems guilty not ATC, And Israeli press exaggerated?

So it turns out the Air France's A318 pilot descended to FL347 instead of FL35, while the ELAL B777 was cruising at FL34 (making the AF plane higher with only 213 meters instead 300 meters), but they were still 3.5 nautical miles (6 KM) apart, which although is an error as it is closer than they should be, but is far less than a danger than the the 300 meters apart, that the Israeli press has reported.
What I do find intresting that in the linked article, they also quote from Haaretz, that the aircraft were only 300 meters apart
Can anybody clarify things?
