Seems to me that the advent of EBCI should tip the scale. And provide new ways to approach the issue, upstream from mediating a dispute. Another ounce of prevention. Actually, a new opportunity.
For instance, fairly early in the boarding process - at the same time as the overhead bin loading encouragements are recited over the PA - the flight attendant can say, "Saving seats isn't cool, people. For only $10 each, Early Bird Check-In enables you to stay together from the moment you leave the house." Or, "...get out of bed." Or, "...went to bed, last night." "Who says LUV isn't cheap?" Or some such. Or the GA could say it, taking the heat off the FA. Scale tipped.
Makes a good sales pitch, as well as further resolving the issue.
(Do I sound like a fan of EBCI? ^)
