Tried to be proactive and change flights but AC said NO!

So here I am thinking how do I avoid missing my flights due to all of the new security crap rules? So I called AC and asked if I can go earlier and I do not mind making the extra connections so I can be in YVR with my son one hour earlier so we can make our LA flight and not miss out on any quality Disney Time.

I checked and the fare was less, by $20 ( ALL TANGO + FARES ), and I get one more segment and we get to be in YVR 2.45 hrs before the LA flight leaves. Its all good, we are being proactive and then AC said sure, fare difference and they wanted to charge me $75 change fee! I said WAIT, this morning I was to the good by $20 but there was no refund, which is fine, as I picked up one more segment and 500 AP. I did not pull the trigger (i will hate myself as the agent thought I needed 40 minutes between flights but YEG its 35 min so I was good)!

So you know I have YXE-YEG-YYC-YVR-LAX - I asked for YXE-YYC-YEG-YYC-YVR-LAX for the same day just 3 hours earlier OR YXE-YYC-YEG the night before and then YEG-YYC-YVR-LAX as sceduled, but three hours earlier! Yes I need to be in YEG to meet someone and drop stuff off in front of the MLL and I pick up my son in YYC!

I spoke to AC three times now and three different answers. So I will leave well enough alone, as AC will need to make things right and get me to LAX, but I will be saying "I tried to be pro active but you guys said no". I was willing to leave the night before and spend five hours sleeping at the airport in YEG so I could catch the first flight out, I tried!
