People often share snacks, drinks, other stuff on a flight. And sometimes flights can last longer than 3 hours due to flight delays, weather, traffic, etc. It's just more comfortable for some people to sit with people they know, than with strangers, especially if they have a fear of flying or traveling.
I don't see it as being so unreasonable.
Having said that, I wouldn't try to reserve the best seats on the plane. I'd go to some unpopular row in the back and save them for my companion.

My wife & I are both frequent fliers. When we travel together, we both like aisle seats. We each find a seat, and say "see ya at the other end". She reads, and I fall asleep.
