This is totally redicules. Most Domestic flights are 2 to 3 hours. Unless you're traveling with a child, what is so important that you can't be seperated from a spouse or friend for that short amount of time? 99% of these people don't say a single word to each other during the flight.
People often share snacks, drinks, other stuff on a flight. And sometimes flights can last longer than 3 hours due to flight delays, weather, traffic, etc. It's just more comfortable for some people to sit with people they know, than with strangers, especially if they have a fear of flying or traveling.
I don't see it as being so unreasonable.
Having said that, I wouldn't try to reserve the best seats on the plane. I'd go to some unpopular row in the back and save them for my companion.
