I have done it with no problem, albeit it was a NW flight.
I've done it with both NW and DL flights, and it's not an issue. The staff at the checkin counters are experts at this... I am sure they do it plenty of times every day.

GaryDD mentions, it speeds up the process to have done OLCI and have your BP ready, but they can do it all with confirmation numbers as well.
One more question... Is this itenerary listed as one ticket, or where they purchased seperately?
