I typically travel with thousands of dollars worth of photographic equipment such as professional camera bodies and lenses. There's no way I'd check those things. If need be I'll ship them ahead with Fed Ex and insure them on domestic trips. That's not really an option for international travel though. There's got to be a better way than these kneejerk over reactions.
It's a huge issue. I know a number of professional photographers who turned down all international assignments during the one-carry-on period post 9-11. I also traveled with thousands of dollars of photo equip during that period and it was only possible to do it when traveling with Mrs. BLG so that we could split things up -- she took the photo-carry-on and I took the carry-on with meds, etc.
