I haven't flown on a student fare in a long time, but when I did I often was able to use the Senator booking guarantee on them - but that booking guarantee no longer works on these booking classes.

However, one advantage of student fares is that they were (are?) in fairly high buckets which if viewed in terms of today's M&M program, it would mean that you get more miles and can more easily upgrade.
