Politicians like 'smoke bans' because they give the appearance of action without annoying the majority, like a plastic bag ban would.

The majority fall into two camps: Those who actively support the bans, and those who don't really care one way or the other. I fall into the latter camp - I'm not really that bothered by cigarette smokers but I also don't care if ciggies are banned outright, everywhere.
