My situation is similar but more annoying because my travel agent in this case is orbitz.com.

I booked my ticket on orbitz, they didn't assign me a seat. I am unable to assign a seat online.

This is for an AA flight operated by Iberia.

I called AA and they told me to call Iberia saying "we don't do seat assignments for other airlines, just AA"

I called Iberia and they said "Call AA. They sometimes tell their customers that they can't and they send them to us but we really can't and they can so call them again and insist that they do it."

I called AA again and this time they said that since I booked it with a travel agent I need to pay $15 or contact my travel agent

I called orbitz and they said that they can't do it but they'll call AA and try to do it for me...after about 20 minutes of back and forth they said "oh AA says that they'll do it if you pay $15. do you want to do that?' I said "no."

So about 2 hours of phone calls and being on hold and talking to random people and getting forwarded from one place to another...I have no option but to wait and see what I get (a middle seat probably) or pay $15.

Orbitz sucks. AA kinda sucks. Iberia...well, they just suck too.

Rock.
At some point you have to decide what your time is worth and whether paying the $15 is more efficient than the time you've wasted.
