This part is not entirely correct. Even though the seat maps on US's website block-out Row 1, I have often been UG'd to Row 1 at the Gold window (including my PHX-YYC flight with my gf tomorrow). And even when I am UG'd to a non-Row 1 seat, I call the GP line and get put in Row 1 if any seats are available.
