Well, they would have been Long Haul crew, not Short Haul, as we are not trained on the 777 full stop, so would not be operating the flight.
They must have meant that they were not Grade 1 crew, i.e. First Trained. Although seeing as you would not receive a Long Haul First service on a Short Haul route, sort of null and void of them to state it really.
