YES it is not really a "AI" concept! We are booked for this friday and I actually requested som info from the Marriott CasaMagna Cancun and they have send me all the restrictions. Basically it is Buffet Breakfast, Snack Lunch and a 3 course meal for dinner. If you want to eat Filet Mignon or Lobster and so on you have to pay extra. House Wine & Red is includes and Vodka for example is Smirnoff quality and so on. Mini Bar is extra and you are not allowed to take anything from the bars to your room and need to wear a AI bracelet. Will see how it works!
Just to give you my two cents. I have used the AI package at the Casa Magna several times in Cancun. They hold you pretty close to the type of drinks you can order, however, the food is basically whatever you want, whenever you want, or is was up until July. You can even have two lunches if you want!!! Anyway, there is a add on of $10.00 for lobster and expensive cuts of beef as you suggest. I think you will have no problem at all, this is a great resort with plenty of variety in the food department. Enjoy your stay and hopefully the beach restoration project is making headway!!! It was moving pretty quickly when I was at the JW last week.
As far as taking drinks to your room, they had loosened this up as of the summer as well. I was able to take a bucket of four beers up to enjoy on my balcony in late afternoons when the kids were done at the pool. That being said, the bartenders become more comfortable the longer you are there and an extra tip goes a long way!!
