They do sell special light-weight cabin bags. I recently bought one that was just over 1kg; my old one was "light" at 3kg. You do need to give up the wheels to get the weight down. I use that and a small backpack as my 2nd item, have never had a complaint from QF about it (so they actually are fairly reasonable about the rules).
