To be honest being a US citizen and entering the US with a different foreign passport makes absolutely no sense in my opinion. In case of what the OP posted the airline just has to check if you have the proper documents to enter the US. For US citizens their passport, for foreign nationals in addition their visas and ESTA entries.
One of my co-workers is a dual US-UK citizen. However, being in the UK for a while now, he let his US passport expire and when he travels to US [and he does once or twice a year] he goes with his UK passport and hasn't had any problems [so far].
I've been trying to tell him that he should get new US passport and travel with that to States, but it seems he can't be bothered.
