Actually QF has offered fares ex-LHR that are even lower than this -- and available for anyone to purchase. I've heard of GBP 3000 for F on QF LHR-SYD, and there was a cricket fare as a promotion that was based on the cricket score (think it was about AUD 200 LHR-SYD). So there is ample precedent for QF selling seats at even lower fares than this -- so there cannot be a defence of "clearly this fare was an error and the purchaser knew it" when such fares were widely offered in 2009.
Um, that fares on a different route may have had them during a major sale is irrelevent to whether it was reasonable to believe on this route. I still maintain that the OP's original post shows that the OP wasn't even sure it was a genuine non-mistake fare
I also believe that VH-RMD's assessment of what would likely happen in a simple small claims proceeding in that the person would get a refund but no 1st class, would fit in with my experiences with SCCs
