Well, that would make sense, given that when you "cancel" an award ticket, you get the miles back in your account (once you pay the redeposit fee).
By contrast, if you cancel a ticket that has a nonrefundable fare, then you don't get the money back (although you can apply the value, minus the change fee, to another PNR).
