AA does waive close-in award booking fees for EXPs, though. Not sure if UA offers this.

And FWIW, CO waives all award change and redeposit fees for top-tier Platinums. They do charge close-in booking fees, although they are reduced for Platinums (max $50).

I guess my point is every airline offers something a little different.
