UA doesnt' allow you to put the ticket on hold for 24 hours though, do they? I had read somewhere that diff airlines provided 24 hours 'grace period' in diff ways. AA allows you to put ticket on hold and lock in the price but others require you to purchase the ticket and you can get it refunded within 24 hours. I know CO doesn't let you put one on hold but does let you refund within 24 hours of purchase.
