Go to the airport early and see if they are looking overbooked on the LAX-STS leg. I bet if they are, they'll happily give you the direct flight.

You MIGHT even be able to stand by for the direct flight if you go in early, even if they aren't overbooked. AS's standby policies are pretty liberal.
