In all the instances I have done this, I have not paid for the ticket. I just put it on hold.

However, even if you buy a ticket with a 24 hour cancel policy (which carriers beside DL allow that?), then attached to that ticket is a ticket number, form of payment etc. It is usually difficult to change even the form of payment.
That said, I don't think it's that hard. I'm not a TA, but I believe it is possible to separate a reservation from the ticket supporting it and swap in a different ticket.
