Off topic, but I think important, I think your TA gave you good advice. A good friend and cousin of mine didn't pay attention to that advice some years ago; the monument erected to the dead is in a cornfield south of Cusco (FTer
Pedro M had
three friends on that flight and 49 US exchange students were killed as well as a number of Peruvians - only the junior / apprentice SO were killed). Peruvian airlines come and go, corruption is rife, and often safety and inspections give way to friendly favors and waivers.
Google
LANSA 502 (August 9, 1970) - that was only one of several LANSA "incidents", and LANSA is hardly the only airline with such a nasty record.
Aviation Safety Network database
page extract:
"The Peruvian government investigated the accident, and in its final report concluded that the probable cause of the accident was the improper execution of engine-out procedures by the flight crew, with contributing factors of improper loading of the aircraft and improper maintenance procedures by company personnel.
Follow-up / safety actions:
There was evidence of a coverup and falsification of critical maintenance records by LANSA employees during the investigation process. The Peruvian government subsequently fined LANSA and some of its employees, and suspended the airline's operating license for 90 days as a consequence."
Kill 101 people, cease ops ninety days, That's scalar, all right. Christmas Eve of 1971, they lost another and killed 92 (LANSA 508.) Of course, they had already lost a Lockheed Constellation and a DC-3 prior to either of these two Electras.

Here's the article, in Spanish, which I cannot read:

I'm having the Peru TA purchase my domestic tickets from LAN as a local so the prices are cheaper. Apparently they have two tier pricing and charge more to foreigners. Not very tourist friendly.
