"Few passengers saw this coming, and now thousands of people who bought flights in advance are wondering what to do with their worthless tickets. If you used a Visa or MasterCard to buy your ticket, you will receive a refund...just call your credit card company. If you paid for your ticket using an American Express or Discover, you will not get a refund. If you can't cancel your travel plans, check with other airlines that may accept tickets from National, but don't wait, because you only have three days to exchange them.

National Airlines says it will not issue any refunds for tickets."


Does anyone know why Visa and MasterCard (it appears regardless of the bank) gives a refund while Amex does not?

One more reason not to use Amex I guess.
