If you are slightly late for a connection and you have been flying a competitor airline, make this point known at the check in desk. Airlines are constantly trying to outperform each other, and they may try to impress you with the services that they offer. A first or business class upgrade isn't guaranteed in this situation, but it isn't unheard of.
