You are fingerprinted as part of working for TSA however.
When I had "clearence" to work for a federal bank (an N.A.), I had to get fingerprinted and they did an FBI "international background check; I assume that means they run the prints INTERPOL's version of AFIS in addition to the FBI AFIS database.

So is there an abbreviated FBI check without fingerprints?

It looks like you can get a SIDA badge at most airports so long as the identity you submit doesn't have a criminal history. That gets a from me.
