I got an insert with my cc bill about bonus miles offered if I upgrade my Delta AmEx to Delta Platinum AmEx. It said, 5000 miles for the first purchase, 5000 miles if upgrading from a current Delta AmEx, and 10000 miles if I charge $25000 in a year.

I called the 1-800 number about this offer, and the phone rep told me that I only get 5000 miles for the first purchase and not the 5000 miles for upgrading, because the offer was referring to regular Delta AmEx holers (who initially got only 5000 for card activation), and not Delta Gold AmEx holders (where I initially got 10000 miles for card activation 2 years ago). If that's the case, why did they send me the offer with my Delta Gold AmEx bill? So I declined the offer. For now.

Does anyone know if this phone rep was right, or if I should call back and try to get the extra 5000 miles for upgrading my Delta Gold to Platinum?

If the rep was right, is there anyway that I can collect more bonus miles by either canceling my Gold and then applying for Plat, or first applying for Plat and then canceling my Gold?

On a side note, I thought about *wood AmEx, but I don't have a *wood account, I basically never stay at their hotels, and the only way that I earn miles is through flying, credit cards, and iDine.
