Quite right, and thank you for putting it that way. I've only got one question, in that case - can anyone compare the actual foreign exchange rates Amex and the Santander or Nationwide cards give you on, say, dollars or euros? Because if the Amex rate is more than 1-2% better than the 0% fee cards, the race is tighter. Or am I being stupid/misunderstanding things?

Buying the miles at an effective 4% by using the BA PP card for purchases is rather expensive - say £100 expenditure abroad becomes £104 and earns 156 BA Miles, so one mile costs about 2.56p but may be worth it to you. Buying BA Miles from BA costs £31 for 1,000 or £175 for 10,000, so 3.1p/mile or 1.75p/mile in these examples. (There's a calculator at ba.com.)
Using a Santander Zero MC abroad costs 0% in FE or fees. The Nationwide Visa card costs 0% in Europe or 1% outside Europe.
